  • The Crown Plaza was a pleasant surprise for my husband and I....I had just finished a conference at the Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines, listed as 5 star right on the National Open Torrey Pines Golf Course. We then moved to the Crown Plaza in Mission Valley near Old Town to spend a few days discovering San Diego.We enjoyed the Crown Plaza much more! Room was great, Lush Foliage in the Court Yards was far nicer than the Torrey Pines, the staff was friendly, and the pool nicer. Hotel was closer to all of the sights to see, and very close to Old Town, which we really appreciated.A definite strong effort had been made to keep security to a peak, and the Hawaiin pupu bar was an added treat. This Hotel is Very Family Friendly, and the many of the customes were families with small children, but this was not a detriment, and I can wholeheartedly recommend this hotel to families as well as couples-only folks....fun and beautiful place.

  • The Crown Plaza was a pleasant surprise for my husband and I....I had just finished a conference at the Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines, listed as 5 star right on the National Open Torrey Pines Golf Course. We then moved to the Crown Plaza in Mission Valley near Old Town to spend a few days discovering San Diego.We enjoyed the Crown Plaza much more! Room was great, Lush Foliage in the Court Yards was far nicer than the Torrey Pines, the staff was friendly, and the pool nicer. Hotel was closer to all of the sights to see, and very close to Old Town, which we really appreciated.A definite strong effort had been made to keep security to a peak, and the Hawaiin pupu bar was an added treat.   • We extended our business trip by a few days, and so checked out of our pricey Hard Rock Hotel in the gaslamp district (which the company paid for) and stayed here for one night since it was much cheaper than the Hard Rock. After the HR, maybe my standards were artificially high, but here goes: the staff was very friendly and courteous, the room entries were inside the hotel but were motel style (overlooked an open, atrium-style, tropical-likemeeting area where a wedding ceremony had occurred). A bit tacky, and the hallways and elevators looked rundown and sketchy, but thats small. The rooms were nice enough, seemed pretty clean. Big bathroom, two sinks. All the rooms had a small balcony, ours overlooked the pool. Dont plan on sleeping with the balcony door open since there were kids in the pool into the wee hours of the morning (when we got there, they were cleaning up the pool area from an earlier wedding reception). Parking was free, which was nice considering the HR was $30/day. In a really busy area off of I-5, no way you can walk anywhere, you need a rental car to get to any place of interest. Gaslamp district and airport were about 10min away. Located right in Old Town. 3.5 out of 5 stars

  • Was pleased with the overall service of the hotel . I did feel the weekend rates were a little high and a suggestion would be that you could call for a shuttle to the airport instead of a taxi. It was a little confusing to see the shuttle for the Airline employees and none for your customers. I do understand the difference but just a suggestion. Had a great stay.

  • Was pleased with the overall service of the hotel . I did feel the weekend rates were a little high and a suggestion would be that you could call for a shuttle to the airport instead of a taxi. It was a little confusing to see the shuttle for the Airline employees and none for your customers. I do understand the difference but just a suggestion. Had a great stay.

  • When we arrived we were told that check in would be at 4 PM that seemed to be a very late check in time. It allowed us little time to settle in, freshen, and get dressed before dinner. We also brought along our 1 year and he could not take a nap and relax after his long day. They had to change our room since at 4PM the room we had been assigned was still not clean. Although the room we did get was nice and on the upper level overlooking the golf course. That night also happened to be the annual luau it was wonderful for our little guy to see and enjoy. The pool was cold, and did not have a spa (a bit disappointing). Overall it was a very nice place and we would stay again for an overnight stay.

  • We stayed here for a few days during out visit to San Diego. The rooms were clean and the beds were very comfortable. The furniture seemed a bit dated, but the cleanliness more than made up for that. The grounds were beautiful. Very resort-like. The pool was enjoyed by all of the family. The staff was so helpful and friendly (to all of us including the kids). Brunch was good, maybe a bit over priced, but enjoyable. The sushi was very enjoyable, as well as the wait staff. There seemed to be a lot of business travelers, so I was trying to be very careful to keep the kids on a quieter note. But no one seemed to mind or was bothered by their occasional loud voices or splashes.

  • Coming from a beautiful ranch near Sedona, Az I did not expect to find such comfort with such a lovely view from our window. We were on the 8th floor with a great morning view of the SD river and the golf course beyond. We were already prepared for parking fees and internet use fees so were not surprised by these; take heed. We heard the toads crooning all night just like home and we slept extremely well. We found here, what we provide our guests in Sedona. This establishment markets sleeping comfort and we were not diasppointed except that I would have stayed longer had we known we would find such a place in a busy city at such a reasonable price. Since it was on hotel cricle, It was convenient to major highways to get to our destinations quickly, but not near enough to be bothered by traffic noise. I will stay again when in SD and also will look for this hotel chain in other cities as well just for the beds!

  • The bed and linen are pretty comfortable. The counter in the bathroom was recently replaced and therefore very clean. The hotel was renovated in 2007. But I got the sense that it was a cheap makeover. Not sure if its different for rooms in south and north tower. So, aside of the nice things mentioned earlier, all the rest does show the age.If you are looking for a place to have a comfortable nights sleep, this clearly fits the bill. I do want to emphasize that sleeping was indeed quite comfortable. If you are looking for a hotel with a more upscale feel, you probably want to look elsewhere.

Friendly staff, beautiful room (requested golf course view, upper floor) excellent service in all areas (reservations, front desk, restaurant, shuttle service) delicious food in restaurant, free shuttles to several places. Only wish they shuttled to airport, cruise ship port. We would definitely choose and recommend this hotel again. 5 star!

Friendly staff, beautiful room (requested golf course view, upper floor) excellent service in all areas (reservations, front desk, restaurant, shuttle service) delicious food in restaurant, free shuttles to several places. Only wish they shuttled to airport, cruise ship port. We would definitely choose and recommend this hotel again. 5 star!

  • The Crowne Plaza (formerly the Red Lion) is a great place to stay. An older facility that has been remodeled recently. The only major problems were the price and the elevators (which kept breaking down). The rooms are very nice. Large beds, great bathrooms. The on-site restaurant is very nice (also expensive). Good all-around place to stay for both business and leisure in the San Diego region. Short trips to the airport, the zoo, and other area attractions. Also reasonably close to the Navy facilities.

  • This hotel was so good. I took a trip with my boyfriend and we decided not to get a rental car due to the expenses. The hotel staff recommended taking public transportation, and the free shuttle was nice. They helped us save so much money on cabs. The staff was always available to answer any questions and gave great recommendations. The hotel was also very nice.

  • This was our third stay in San Diego; the first at the Crowne Plaza. We reserved while still owned by Red Lion, and the Crowne Plaza honored our reservation at the lower room rate. This was definitely a three star hotel, with luxurious bedding and furnishings. The housekeeping staff was very friendly, and went out of their way to make us happy (extra towels, brought us a microwave, etc). Cant say the same for the desk clerks or the bellmen. When we asked about shuttle service to the Convention Center, they said they didnt supply it, but would transport us to Old Towne, IF they had time! No one bothered to tell us that a city Old Town shuttle stopped on the street right outside the hotel! Otherwise, a lovely visit.

  • Although the hotel was very nice and clean, and the customer service was great, we were a little disappointed. Rooms have balconies facing the pool area. There are no restaurants in walking distance, and the hotel food was over priced and not very good. Also, just a few things to keep in mind if you are traveling to the San Diego area and want to go to the beach. The hotel isnt as close to the beach as it says. You will need to have a car, unless you dont mind spending the money on a taxi. But, parking at the hotel is $12/night.

  • Although the hotel was very nice and clean, and the customer service was great, we were a little disappointed. Rooms have balconies facing the pool area. There are no restaurants in walking distance, and the hotel food was over priced and not very good. Also, just a few things to keep in mind if you are traveling to the San Diego area and want to go to the beach. The hotel isnt as close to the beach as it says. You will need to have a car, unless you dont mind spending the money on a taxi. But, parking at the hotel is $12/night.

  • Very friendley and helpfull.. staff.. thank you.. we needed more towels to use the wonderfull pool and within a few min they where there.. The staff where very helpfull as it was our first time there.. Room was large and very nice to accomidate four people.. Thank you for making our first visit to San Diego great.. cant wait to come back!!.. Would use again..

  • I booked this reservatiuon with no knowledge about the hotel other than it carrried the Crowne Plaza brand name. In my travels Ive come to expect Crowne Plazas to be business class hotel towers with large comfortable rooms accessed via elevators situated in a spacious marble and granite lobby. This Crowne Plaza is reminiscent of 1960s era Holiday Inn with rooms entered from an open courtyard surrounding the pool. Once in side the room was quite decent but I am concerned about the security of this open courtyard layout. The hotel description deceptively states that it is near the oldtown Gaslamp district. In fact, it is ten miles from there on bleak and difficult-to-access service road of the I-8 named ""Hotel Circle"" I always try to stay at Crowne Plaza or Intercontinental Hotels thinking that I will know what to expect. In this case I was deceived. Avoid unless you want a similar experience.

  • The rooms and service were excellent!! Newly remodeled, very clean, quiet, and well-stocked. Great beds w/ LOTS of pillows! Staff VERY helpful and courteous. Beautiful surroundings!!! No real breakfast choices (a little pricey buffet/menu at Islands if you have small eaters) on-site or nearby - no fast food: only drawback. Otherwise - VERY pleased

  • My wife and I stayed here in late June. The hotel is centrally located for all the sights in San Diego. We requested a room away from the freeway, and were given one on the 8th floor overlooking a golf course. It was very quiet at night.While it is an older hotel the rooms are updated and very clean. We especially liked having a refrigerator in the room. Very handy for cold drinks and at cocktail hour. The pool and spa area are lovely. We really enjoyed the spa after a day of walking around the zoo.This is a really nice three star in a great location. We would definitely return to the Crowne Plaza.

  • This hotel was so great - we stayed over Christmas weekend so it was at fairly low occupancy but the service was at a level that surprised me. The staff was fabulous, the rooms were roomy and clean, the room service was fast and courteous. The grounds were immaculate. In our opinion, a very good value for the money. This is primarily a business property, so the weekend rates should always be good. ENJOY

  • We thought this hotel was an excellent value for the price we paid. X at the front the front desk was superb to work with when I checked in and throughout the stay, he was very professional and helpful, as were the rest of the staff; always friendly, quick with a smile and very helpful. The grounds were kept very clean and for the most part were quite and comfortable. The room was clean and everything worked well, calls to the front desk were answered promptly and all of our requests were handled quickly and with a smile. Parking (which can be an extra fee in some cases) was crowded at most times during our stay, but adequate. It appeared that an addition was under construction during our stay, but did not effect us at all.The grounds were fenced in, including the parking lot. There was one main entrance to the facility and in my experience everyone walking through the door was observed upon entry. Other entrances were available after entering the parking area -- I had no concerns while staying here at all.The location was pretty well located for easy access to the sights, sounds, and flavors of San Diego; with a car and GPS unit the town was a snap to get around in.

  • The Crowne Plaza is an old 8 floor hotel with exterior room entrances facing the courtyard. Rooms have a lanai with table and chairs and you can leave the door open for fresh air and a breeze. Rooms are upgraded, staff is incredibly friendly, and the restaurants are quite good. There is even a sushi bar. Parking costs you $* a day - which is a little disturbing after paying such a high rate for the room. Very convenient location - Sea World, Zoo, lots of shopping, and local restaurants nearby. Beaches are only 15 minutes away and Old Town is right around the corner. San Diego State Univeristy is about 12 minutes away and Qualcomm stadium is closer than that. For budget conscious folks - its a good place to stay.
