  • This place would have been great but it lacked an orientation. It could have saved us a day and a half to figure out. No one warned us about the dress code at restaurants. Men cannot wear sandals or flip flops. The dinner reservation system is pathetic! Everybody tries to sell you everything! BE WARNED before booking!

  • The hotel was more beautiful than pictures could describe. The staff was attentive and the resort was extremely organized and clean. Our rooms were very spacious and had everything we needed. The pool and beach areas were awesome. We especially liked that nobody could bother you with for sale items while using the beach unless you walked outside the resort. The activites were great as well. We loved the beach party and a few other parties that went on in the bar area.We were slightly disappointed that three of the dinner restaurants were closed due to rennovations. Those restaurants that we did try were all very good with the exception of the American Grill. The main downfall was that the only option for breakfast and lunch was the buffet. The food choices remained the same on those daily so you never really got to try anything new.Although we didnt bring our children, that area was also very well maintained and looked like a place that children would like to play and swim in. This are was also far from the adult area for those that may not want to listen to screaming children.

  • Unfortunely there isnt alot of space for me to go into detail. The beach was good and the pool but the hotel lies on a property that has 2 other hotels as well so everything is FAR. The food will kill your stomach even if you are a native like me and my wife. The resaurants are ridiculous. You have to call to make reservations and when you go the actual restaurants they are empty. When talking to other people they had to pay someone to get them in.The buffet was the okay part for breakfast but then after a while its the same food over and over again. We constantly had to ask for towels and the lobbies didnt have any air conditioning so while when we got there we had to wait for our room and then when we said we would take our own luggage they gave us the run around to our room when the room was a in front of the lobby. The best part of our trip was the bartenders in the tropical lobby. They made it worth it if it wasnt for them we would have left earlier. I have stayed in other hotels in the dominican rep and this has been the worse. The only thing that was included were drinks and food. While we were there the casino ripped someone off and their excuse was in d.r there are rules and in the u.s there are others.. then kicked another person out because they were on a winning streak and said he was too drunk to be there. when the guy wasnt even drinking. If you are still going to go there bring alot of money because nothing is free not even the excursions which are rip offs anyway.

  • Registration- It took about 10 minutes to get us checked in. No line. Same with check out. Nothing traumatic as some other reviews indicate. Room-- We stayed on the Caribe side and did NOT do Royal Service. Room was very spacious and was in building 45. Very clean. We tipped our attendant $3-$4 daily and she would give us free Diet Pepsi, Water, and Beer in our fridge daily. Pools-- The pools were nice and big. The Tropical pool is next to the Flintstone land for kids so they suggested that we go to the Caribe pool as their would be less kids. We went to both and found that the Tropical pool had significantly less individuals. Swim up bars at both pools did come in handy. Beach- Beautiful! The water is nice and clear. The sand is white. We didnt have to wake up at the crack of dawn to get chairs. Not sure if this was because of the time of year we went but there was still a lot of people there. Dining-- The food was decent. Everyone raves about the Japanese restaurant but I wasnt a fan. The Thai, Dominican Republic, and Mexican restuarants were actually our favorites. The Marketplace 24 Buffet was pretty decent. Entertainment-- The shows that are put on nightly at 10pm by the unimpressive casino were not that good. However, since there really isnt a lot to do, we would have a few drinks and watch the dancers. Lots of Walking-- A lot of reviews make this place sound like it is larger than life. It is a resort. Yes.. you do walk. Unless you have physical limitations, it wont take you longer than a 15 min stroll from the lobby to the beach. Tram service runs regularly. Go and have fun!

  • After reading most of the hotel reviews prior to my trip, I had a couple of minor reservations prior to arriving at the Melia Tropicale. However, after having just spent a wonderful week there, I feel I must add my take on the property. Yes, the grounds are VERY spacious, but, they are also gorgeous and the passenger trolleys (trains or whatever you want to call them) come around frequently to shuttle you to and from the main lobbies and restaurants and then back to your room. When they werent punctual enough for some (avg. wait = less than 5 minutes) there were always porters zipping around to pick you up in a golf cart. As a dedicated ""foodie"" who typically avoids a buffet like the plague, I found the buffets very appealing, fresh, appetizing and tasty. As far as the restaurants go, the only one we didnt particularly care for was the Mexican. Other than that, we found the dining options quite good and the service equally good. The staff were very friendly and accomodating and though I typically left a small tip for my waiters, waitresses and bartenders, I felt no pressure to do so and actually felt quite good about it since many other vacationers did not.The beach and pool areas are both very nice, though I personally would have liked if the pool was a little quieter (lots of kids, music, etc.) If you have children, they will LOVE IT!Nightlife was a little dead, but, a couple of area discos, hard rock cafe, etc. were pretty good if you wanted to venture off the property. Overall, we felt safe, the staff were really nice and courteous and we will definitely go back.

  • It was just as it appears in the photos, but it is a little on the tourist trap side of things. As long as you stay on the resort grounds you wont be hassled too much to buy things, but if you venture too far down the beach you will reach some shops where the retailers are a little on the pushy side. There are no prices on anything and you barter for everything. If you like to haggle for useless trinkets, then that area is for you. I would say the pool area is at least three acres....it is very large with lots of nooks to have to yourself. If you go you will be approached by the guys promoting the Manati Zoo park...they have swimming with the Dolphins. I went. It is not worth the cash, AND, you take an open bus through the sections of Punta Cana. Skip it! The food was pretty good and the service was as well. The drinks are small, and are made with generic components to save cash....... There are pretty much only beer, wine, and rum drinks...bummer....they didnt know how to make a rum runner. The beach area is beautiful, and you can do everything from lounge under a tree or cabana all day to para-sail/speed boat/jet ski/snorkeling/wind surf....etc.. I opted to be extremely lazy and found a nice spot under the shade of a tree.

  • My brother stayed here and broke his leg, I had to fly from NY to help him due to the lack of help from the resort, they did not even have a wheel chair for him. Also they should let you know how big the property is before you book. It was a 25 min walk from my room to the lobby. I would never want people like my parents to stay here, I think they would be frightened due to the lack of communication and the walk to get anywhere is a work out in itself.

  • We had a good time at the resort with only a couple of problems that worked out on its own. Had Royal Service and happy we paid the extra, cant immagine staying there without haveing the special attention due the how large it is and hearing some comments being made by other guest that did not have the RS. Biggest problem was transportation (was suppose to be available when ever it was need) around the resort. Did lots of waiting and no response from the VIP lounge on 2 occasions. The beauty of the resort and the nice service staff in the bar and resturant at GABIs made up for the inconvience.

  • I loved the trip.1) Nothing is farther than a 15 minute walk. If youve been attached to your car your whole life, this might be a little too large, but it was nice to get away from people. Plus, a 10 minute walk to dinner each night was nice if you didnt feel like waiting 10 minutes for the train. 2) We never had any problems with the food. If youre not used to eating different kinds of food, you might have problems, but otherwise the food was well worth it.3) I would definitely stay here again. Most of the staff was very helpful, and compared to other resorts, you never have to worry about getting a seat near the pool or beach. As long as youre willing to enjoy your vacation, and not worry about getting to everywhere in a hurry you will love this resort.

  • We did our research and also asked friends who have stayed in Punta Cana. This seemed to be a great choice for a family. On arrival with a confirmed reservation we were told they were overbooked. We had royal service and they just told us bluntly you are going to a sister resort the Paradisus. The quality of accomodations was not the same and the transfer was a two hour zoo. The Melia staff was rude to us and made it clear we werent staying there. online travel website tried to help but the hotel was overbooked and was bouncing other families as well. The experience of being transferred could have been better. The new hotel didnthave details on us after a 30 minute wait at the desk. A complete lack of management support for an ugly situation. We believe it was a ploy to fill the sister site by overbooking. I wrote a review for the Pardisus as well. We would not stay at either site again.

  • Ive stayed at 5-star hotels in the past. This will be the last time I stay at an all-inclusive resort. No orientation! You have to figure things out yourself. Buy this, buy that was what we heard all week. Food was okay, not great. Men must cover feet for dinner or no service!

  • Ive stayed at 5-star hotels in the past. This will be the last time I stay at an all-inclusive resort. No orientation! You have to figure things out yourself. Buy this, buy that was what we heard all week. Food was okay, not great. Men must cover feet for dinner or no service!

  • After reading so many negative reviews, I thought I had made a big mistake, but it turned out to be a great vacation. To all those who thought the beds were too hard, the food unacceptable, the drinks too weak, the staff rude and did not speak English, to those who did not like the cobblestone walks, or thought check-in was too slow: The food was terrific, we ate at the Market buffet, Thai, Japanese, American Grill, Dominican, French and Italian restaurants and had absolutely no complaints whatsoever. If you like a tall alcholic drink, bring your own large thermal or plastic cup. We had no trouble with language barrier because the staff that we came in contact with all spoke English. Check in did not take more than 10 minutes, which I consider OK, especially when you are supplied with a coctail. We requested a room near the pool, beach and Agora Buffet which we ate at for breakfast and lunch. We were in building 8 and this was an ideal location. X who is at customer service near the Caribe lounge was the best of the best. Thru him, we never had to make a reservation for an evening meal, he did it for us upon our arrival the first night. When we needed transportation to the main building from our room, all we did was call X and he had a golf cart pick us up rather than use the trams that run thru the grounds. I suggest taking a bunch of $1.00 bills for tips, a few dollars goes a long way. Also, take washcloths, they dont seem to have them. As for the grounds, they were absolutely breathtaking, take your camera for sure.

  • The Melia Caribe was absolutely beautiful! The grounds were extremely well kept, the pool was great, the beach was stunning. We stayed at the Caribe side, there were less families with kids, but the resort is so large that you really dont feel like youre ever in a crowded area. The restaurants were great, especially the Thai restaurant and the Seafood restaurant! The rooms were very nice, all marble, all had balconies. The staff was helpful. The lobbies were beautifully designed. There were a lot of things to do at night; there were two cool lounges to get drinks at; the casino was pretty nice (if youre not losing your money!), there was a sports bar which was fine. The lobbies themselves though were a cool place to hang out and people watch. This is a large resort, I loved that fact about it because you never felt bored. There was a beach party the second night we were there-great music, the crowd of people that come here was a wonderful mix Americans, Canadians, and Europeans; everyone was very friendly and sociable. I will definetely be going back here, we are reccommending the Melia to everyone we know!!

  • Definitely do the Royal Service--it is worth every penny and any complaints I heard were from people without Royal Service. I knew a little Spanish, but never found the language to be a problem--everyone was nice and helpful and they even attempted to teach us some new phrases. With RS, you can call from anywhere on the property to have someone pick you up--unlike the train which runs on a specific course every 10min--but we used this too and it was fine. We never got sick--we were careful not to drink the tap water and to stay hydrated by drinking lots of bottled water. The drinks were ever flowing and there was always someone at the beach or by the pool bringing you drinks. We were able to make reservations the day of and still get into any restaurant we wanted to--so many choices and they all were great. The Gabi club had a great breakfast and lunch buffet with many choices and the items were varied from day to day. We never had anyone even approach us about the vacation club. Overall, this was a fantastic vacation and we are already planning to return next year.

  • This was the worst service I have ever experienced on a vacation. No one at the front desk cares if there is a problem. I had no air conditioning in my room one night because the maid left the sliding glass door open a crack and when I called at night to tell them I had no air I had to wait until the morning for them to send someone. No information was ever given for any hotel actvities, you have to ask, and get lucky that you find someone that understands you! Dont bother getting Dominican pesos, they are useless in their own country. My whole family had the runs off and on the entire trip. Making dinner reservations is impossible if you have a large family. We traveld with a total of 10 family members and could never get reservations. We got to eat together a couple of times because we paid of the maitre D.Forget it if you are traveling with a family member that has a disability and needs a wheel chair. They have 2 rickety old wheel chairs on the entire resort, and they tell you if if breaks you owe them *.The time share pushers annoy you after every breakfast and lunch. This place is a joke. Stay away!

  • It was a nice place, but way to big. I went on Dec. 20, 2008 for a family reunion. but it didnt felt like it b/c the place was to big and we were all over the place. To get to the resturants you need to like a trolly which was so annoying, especially I had my 7 month old sons stroller all the time. The rooms needs renervation. The bathroom was so disgusting! Was not cleaned at all. I though I had dead bugs in the bath tub, but it as black dent marks. Food is good, good service, ugly rooms. This was my aunts 2nd time in Punta Cana, and shs said it wasnt the best place to stay at.

  • The common areas of the resort were very clean and glamorous, The pool, beach, and spa were great. The restaurants surpassed expectations for an all-inclusive, the bars served top-shelf alcohol (you would pay extra for a bottle of wine at dinner but prices were reasonable). You never felt crowded at any time, always a seat at the pool or beach, always room to eat a meal (you would make a reservation for a better restaurant). Very pleasant experience. Only two gripes are tthe room and pushy salespeople trying to sell timeshares. Our room was a basic room, OK when you first walked in, but you notice it wasnt really clean (crud under the faucet), ours was on first floor next to a service road with a 24 hour guard and prople walking by and curtains that would not close, so noisy and no privacy. Really pushy salesprople hawking timeshares. We completely ignored them. Also, you are constantly getting run off the walking paths by carts and mopeds which reek of diesel fuel.

  • The Melia is a beautiful resort. My fiance and I stayed in a royal services deluxe jr suite and loved it. We had alot of activities to participate in during our stay. Everyone was very friendly and the food and service were excellent. The only issue I had is that on some days it took a while to get towels etc... replaced in the room. Also, anyone who visits should try to bring everything they need with them because its extremely expensive to purchase anything in the resort.

The hotel was clean, offered good service, a variety of food choices, etc. However, I was disgusted by the relentless efforts of a sales team that constantly tried to get you to participate in a time share tour. They were in the hotel lobby, the pool area and even on the beach.

  • My husband and I were thrilled to go on this vacation with friends for a great vacation in the Dominican Republic. Everything from the beach to the room to the bars were excellent. The front desk was very friendly at check in and everyone on staff was always willing to help out whenever we had a question or needed directions. The pool and beach were never too packed to get a good spot. The only complaint we had was when we were checking out. The other couple we were traveling with had purchased a calling card so that they would be able to stay in contact with their child back in the states. The hotel staff at check in stated that the calling card could be used for calls made to the states, but that there would be a $2 connection fee per call. At check out we got another story and they were billed for the total amount of almost all of the calls they made to home. My advice to anyone traveling to the D.R. is to buy a calling card when you get there or get something in writing to show you have been told you can use the card you have. The manager who came to help us with this issue was VERY RUDE and unwilling to work with our friends on the matter. Everyone else at the resort was extremely helpful and polite. Overall we had an awesome experience and we will be going back to the Melia Caribe Tropical for another vacation very soon! (I just hope we dont have to deal with that same manager again.)

  • My boyfriend and I went there to celebrate our anniversary, his birthday and my graduation. We both enjoyed staying at the hotel. It is a very large hotel. It is a small state. You have to take a train to get around the facility or walk and take a chance of getting lost. Ladies forget about high heels, the walk is to long. Must bring comfortable shoes. Dress nice and casual during the evening. I would recommend you calling in advance for dinner reservations, they book very fast. The food was great! We really enjoyed the japenese restaurant and also the sea food restaurant. Julio makes some awesome mama juanas. This shot is a must! Everyone in the facility is very nice, we loved the bar at the pool. Would recommend getting a massage by the beach, it was awesome and inexpensive. Next time we would like to stay at a smaller facility were everything is within walking distance. I would rate this hotel a seven.

  • My travelling buddy and I really enjoyed the Melia. Ive had the pleasure of staying at Melia properties in Mexico and have always been pleased. One of the doctors at work recommended staying here and Im so glad that we did. Because I live in a ""service industry"" town I found that their staff was very friendly & helpful. The food was incredible.... yes, even the buffet food!! (What wonderful tasting fruits & veggies) The only thing that I would change about my trip if I could was that the time share staff was pushy. Unfortunately my roomie and I ended up lying daily stating that we had been on the tour the day before. I hated having to tell that fib. Dont be stupid and vacation in August either. Super HUMID!! Ill take Vegas dry heat any day. ha haOverall we had a wonderful experience and enjoyed lounging by the pool and beach with drink in hand. You wont be sorry if you book at the Melia!! :)
