  • We were very pleased with our stay at The Palace Hotel. We like the areas in SF that are away from the concentration of tourists. This hotel is still central enough but a few blocks away from the overly crowded Union Square. The best part about the location is that it is right next to a BART stop and major streetcar lines. The hotel itself is very nice and the highlight is by far the beautiful Garden Court. If you want to do something special, do Sunday Brunch (or any breakfast) there. The pool was enjoyable. The rooms were a little small but very well furnished.

  • We have stayed at many hotels in San Francisco, and, during 2 of our last 3 visits to the Palace hotel the swimming pool and hot tub were closed, for several days, due to ""maintenance. "" Guests do not learn of this fact, however, until they are actually at the pool, ready to go swimming, and they see a small sign posted at the door saying the facility is closed. I made our reservation directly with Starwood, and the pool was already closed, and was never told of the broken pool. I also called the hotel spa three times shortly before we checked in and was never informed of the broken pool, although one of the advertised big features of the spa is the fact that spa guests can use the pool and hot tub. The staff is apparently instructed to act as if this is a recent, rare event because, even when we were checking out of the hotel after the pool had been broken for several days, guests were still calling the front desk in surprise when they discovered the pool was broken. It is a beautiful pool, but do not count on it being operational. The staff will give you taxi vouchers to go to another hotel and use the pool at the other hotel, but, this is a real pain, especially if you are a family with children. Otherwise, I was offered no compensation in any way, although I certainly did ask. The hotel is also over priced, and one can find much better hotels for the same price in the area.

  • I enjoyed the hotel for its beauty, comfort, and art! The Maxfield Parrish painting in the restaurant is museum quality. The breakfast is amazing and the pool and saura were a blessing. I would recommend it for the overall experience.

  • The lobby is absolutely gorgeous and the Garden Court is break taking with its high ceiling and chandeliers. The bedroom was contemporary, cozy, and very spacious for two individuals. The bed and linens were incredibly comfortable. The bathroom was well appointed with amenities. Turn down service is done every night. Housekeeping followed through with every request and was very prompt. The concierge staff was knowledgeable about the surrounding areas and gave great walking directions. A friend recommended this hotel. I work in one of the most luxurious hotels in Las Vegas and have very high expectations when staying at other hotels. I felt that the value of the product vs. price at the Palace Hotel was remarkable. I will definitely re-visit this hotel again and will recommend it to anyone.

  • This hotel trades on its history, which is great as far as it goes. Rooms are small, hot, small/soft beds, and everything outrageously priced. Internet, for example was $14.95/day, compared with free to $9.95 at other hotels in town. Food likewise. Never again!

  • I spent three nights at the Palace recently and was totally pleased with our stay. The pool and fitness center were wonderful, the only problem being the kids wanted to spend all day there! The check in was easy and, seeing we had two kids with us, they upgraded us to a larger room which was much appreciated. The only problem in the room was a noisy refrigerator and somewhat thin walls. The bellmen, especially Paul, were extremely helpful and knowledgeable. If you self-park around the corner at the Hearst Garage, the 24 hour rate is ""only"" $20, a deal in this part of the city. Great location, easy walk to Moscone, MOMA, Union Square and entrance to Chinatown. Bart and MUNI right outside the door. The wife and kids said as we were leaving, ""Can we stay here every time we come to the City? Thats good enough for me!

  • I love staying in a beautiful old hotel like this instead of the usual chain. Yes, the room was small and the selection of movies was poor. And yes, housekeeping did knock at 9:30 pm when I hadnt called them. But these are minor things. The high ceilings and luxurious hallways and of course the Garden Court are great! Parking was very expensive at $48 a day.

  • The hotel was Elegant, convenient, had a fabulous lobby, the 7th floor room was spacious yet quiet overlooking Montgomery Street. The linens were clean and starched and the pillows down. The resturant and lobby looked like the Plaza in New York City. The bar was a hot spot on Friday evening. Located on Market Street it is so convenient to Union Square and Chinatown. An easy 10 minute walk to the Ferry Building and Museum of Modern Art is two blocks away. The only problem, I had to leave very early on Saturday morning, and the cab doorman insisted I get into a cab even though I had ordered a shuttle. He was representing the hotel, but not wearing a uniform. Very bad form. The shuttle pulled up before my bags were loaded in the cab. The cab would have been twice the cost of the shuttle. I also asked for a wake-up call and never received one even though I was taking the 4:40 shuttle to SFO. However I loved this place and would definitely stay again. I felt very safe, even as a single person, and was a good value for San Francisco.

  • The check-in process took forever, and there were only 2 people checking in. After getting to my room, I had to fix the plumbing since the toilet wouldnt shut off. The concierge was quite helpful in getting us tickets for an alcatraz tour - which Ive been told are sometimes hard to come by. Checking out was easy - but the wait for the valet to bring the car took entirely too long. The stay was alright - but I dont think Id go back again.

  • Grand old property with modernized facilities and friendly service, the Palace competes even with hotels in a much higher price range. Basic King-bed guest rooms are smallish, but well furnished and sufficient. Room amenities include refrigerator, hair dryer, ironing board/iron, terry robes, safe, cable TV, internet capability. Pool and fitness center are clean and well-maintained, open 5:00am to 10:00pm (6:00am weekends).Front desk and Concierge were helpful, but can get busy at times. One night, the concierge mistakenly told me I didnt have to worry about advance tickets to a show Id wanted to see, only to find it sold out later. However, the next day, the concierge recommended a delightful show I never would have known about otherwise. Location is central and right near all public transit. They were very accommodating with late check-out and baggage check. Doorman was always ready to offer a kind greeting, open the door, or flag a cab.

  • The main courtyard near the reception area is breathtaking. Most of the hotel has an elegant, historic feel. The restaurant and bar down the hall from the courtyard look like theyre from a bygone area as well. There is a BART station just outside the hotel, and there are many trams and busses on Market Street. You can walk to many restaurants and shops, and even the Ferry Building. Room was nice, albeit a bit small (at least in cmoparison with the Biltmore in L.A., where we had stayed the night before).
