  • Nice, could have been bigger (bf didnt fit in shower very well - hes 61"""", 140lbs). Staff were excellent; extremely helpful! Price reasonable. Wine tasting every night a big plus -wish it was longer than 1/2 hour - never made it due to all the sightseeing. Worst = thin walls: heard loud talking, people doing """"other things"""".Luckily we were out alot sightseeing. Never had trouble falling asleep b/c of noise. ALL of hotel was very decorative/unique. Recycling can in room + organic soap! =) Would stay again for the price. Not recommended for larger people or whole families.

  • If you want a place offering enough silence for a good nights sleep look further. Terrible experience: Our room had an old door connecting to the room next to us. It felt like it havent even been there. I stayed with a kid and we had a hard time to ignore two men on their honeymoon partying all night. I was a bit nervous when I noticed that the hotel did not have air conditioning in any of the rooms but each room has a ceiling fan and the cool San Fran weather I did not have a problem sleeping at night without air conditioning. The rooms are clean but not very big but they are comfortable. The hotel offers wireless for free. The best part of this hotel is the staff. They trip over themselves to help you out. Very, very friendly staff.

  • I am a SF native and returned to town to stay at this property. The walls were paper thin, the bed was a mess - very uncomfortable and the artwork on the walls was satanic (no joke! devil picture hanging over our bed!). TERRIBLE experience. This place is completely AWEFUL!

  • I am a SF native and returned to town to stay at this property. The walls were paper thin, the bed was a mess - very uncomfortable and the artwork on the walls was satanic (no joke! devil picture hanging over our bed!). TERRIBLE experience. This place is completely AWEFUL!

  • The lobby and rooms look EXACTLY like the picture--Lovely. The bath was remodeled and almost brand new. Towels and toiletries were very good quality. The walk-in closet was HUGE. No air conditioner but in SF you rarely need it. I used public transportation and had no trouble during regular business hours. Union Square is farther away than you might imagine--use a cab. The hotel is surrounded by almost nothing of interest, so plan to venture out by cab or MUNI. I will gleefully stay here again.

  • You've got to walk or use public transport (nice buses $1.50 for half a day) to get to """"touristy"""" places from this hotel. If you're willing to do that, the Carlton is excellent in several ways: quiet, free wi-fi, great shower, great beds, very clean and fresh smelling room, helpful and friendly staff. Good restaurant on site with great breakfast choices. It's not swanky or beautiful but it's attractive, functional, and comfortable.

  • Stayed there over Valentines day weekend for 5 nights and the experience was wonderful! The hotels location is unbeatable! Plenty of great restaurants around! I highly recommend Osha, definitely a locals favourite! The bed was super comfy! They also have complimentary wine everyday at 5:30pm. The staff was exceptional, very helpful and friendly. I highly recommend this hotel and will definitely stay there again in the future!

  • This was a great place to stay. As soon as we walked in we were greeted by the friendly hotel staff. Around 5 they had a wonderful wine hour in the lobby, where guests can socialize and relax. The hotel is in easy walking distance of restaurants and cafes, Union Square, China Town, and even the Wharf if you are so inclined. Nites are pretty quiet for a city hotel and the accommodations are very homey. One of our favorite places in SF.

  • Helpful and friendly staff, good room, easy access to transportation. It is not really close to anything but also not very far from anything. Being a moderate walk from Union Square seems to mean that we paid somewhat less than what we have paid for a hotel that is much closer. It also means a quieter location. I liked the comfort from the ceiling fans. The beds and pillows are firmer than what we are used to at home, but everything was is excellent condition. We use the MUNI and 2 lines run right past the front door. It was only 1 block from Polk and from Post, 2 short blocks from Van Ness, and 3 blocks from the California Street Cable Car (up the hill) or Geary (down the hill). Someone who is not willing to walk a few blocks might like it less, but I would rather save a few bucks from Union Square prices and get a little exercise. We have stayed there before and plan to return. It is a good, solid hotel with good service and a location that represents a reasonable compromise of convenience and value.

  • This hotel is OK but it is a good walk to Union Square and is on the edge of the Tenderloin.The lock on our room did not work the first night, then it would not unlock after they fixed it.We changed rooms and while we were moving, a personal item was taken from the lobby and the staff did not seen to care; no accomodation was made for the inconvenience/safety concern about the lock or the stolen personal item from the lobby while we changed rooms.

  • I was in SF for my birthday celebration and they pleasantly surprised me with delicious birthday cake and wine on check-in!! Even if its not your birthday, they have a free wine reception every evening. My experiences with the staff were all wonderful! Location is great (relatively near Union Square). We were able to find street parking for free, but they do have valet. Beds were smaller in size than I expected, but good in terms of comfort. Pets are allowed here for an additional fee. In conclusion, this hotel was a great value. I would definitely recommend this hotel and would definitely stay here again!

The staff is very knowledgeable and willing to help. The hotel 15 minutes walk from Union Square. The room looked like the photos, but a bit smaller than expected, but we were very comfortable. If you want a clean, pretty quiet, friendly, and nicely decorated hotel with good service stay here. Comfortable pillows and bed. Wine tasting each evening was nice. Would definitely stay here again.

  • Nice Hotel, very firendly staff. The Hotel is easy to find and parking is near by. The Hotel Staff are very friendly and funny, the wine tasting in the evening is with music is a great way to start your night off. The room was nice and clean and the bed comfortable. We would stay there again.

  • Nice Hotel, very firendly staff. The Hotel is easy to find and parking is near by. The Hotel Staff are very friendly and funny, the wine tasting in the evening is with music is a great way to start your night off. The room was nice and clean and the bed comfortable. We would stay there again.

  • The Carlton Hotel on Sutter Street is close to Union Square and the theater district. It is a small,charming, hotel with small but nicely decorated rooms, upgraded bathrooms, great beds and linens, and an extremely friendly and efficient staff. We were very pleased with our stay and would all (3 ladies on a road trip) stay there again.

  • My sister and I stayed for 2 nights/3 days. The rooms were very clean and cozy, bathroom bright with fat towels and lovely soaps. The staff was AWESOME (love u)! Sahas food was verry yummy, and the wine each night a treat! We walked all over the area and had a blast. We would definately stay again.

Sahas food was verry yummy, and the wine each night a treat! We walked all over the area and had a blast. We would definately stay again.

  • I was not impressed at all and the hotel was not my style. This was the noisiest hotel I have ever stayed at. I didnt get much sleep. The hotel was old and the bathroom was so small and hard to get ready in. You had to close the door to get around the toilet to get to the sink. I could not find a working heater or AC. I wont stay there again. I did enjoy the staff though.

  • the carlton was beyond my expectations; the staff was helpful and friendly,the room was cozy and cute, the restaurant saha was excellent, wine hour was great, and the location was perfect. i would stay here again without hesitation!

  • I was really excited to stay at the carlton after viewing the pictures of the room(s) we were going to be staying in. After checking we marched up to our room to encounter a really tiny room which looked nothing at all as pictured on this site. The room described two full beds and we got two twins which was not very ideal.Which was the """"superior room"""" good thing we didnt get a regular room i wonder how much smaller that would of been.

  • When I booked this I realized that it was not a high dollar San Fran Hotel, but it had everything I needed for a business trip. The staff was very helpful, rooms were clean and unique, it was easy to to and from downtown, and wireless was free and worked. I will stay here again.

  • When I booked this I realized that it was not a high dollar San Fran Hotel, but it had everything I needed for a business trip. The staff was very helpful, rooms were clean and unique, it was easy to to and from downtown, and wireless was free and worked. I will stay here again.

This hotel is only about two blocks from a lot of shopping and restaurants. I would definitely go back to the Carlton.

  • The front desk crew was so helpful, if you needed a cab, directions or any other help they were right there, if they did not know they would check it out on the internet or call for assistanct to get the information you needed.

  • An INCREDIBLE value for what youre spending AND WHAT YOURE GETTING. Location is close enough to not be horribly inconvenient to get to everything you may want to do. Bus stop is across the street, and convenient. Generally, I am the type to go on vacation and stay in a place that is nothing more than a clean/safe place to crash and spend the whole day away from the hotel. If youre like me... and If youre only looking for a clean, comfortable, nice place with a good price--this is the place to stay. If youre looking to stay in a posh hotel with many amenities, this is not your hotel. There is no gift shop but there is a restaurant (although I never tried it). which said the lobby smelled horrible from the restaurant. I never smelled anything at all of the sort, so maybe the problem has been addressed. (note: I am very sensitive to smells). Its San Francisco.... Ive never needed a/c there ever. Also, we were there when the hotel was almost full to capacity, and had no noise issues as some have complained. It could be that we had good neighbors, however keep in mind, its a city, and city noises are expected. Also, the hotel will book tours for you as a courtesy, which includes pickup at the hotel (although its not represented on all of the various websites where you can book a stay with them.) Staff is tripping over themselves doing everything they can to make your stay a pleasant one, and theyre genuine people who love their job.I will most definitely stay here again. Buy a muni pass for sure!

  • Great experience - and would definitely stay there again. I would stay there just for the service of the staff alone. The staff was fabulous - extremely helpful and accommodating. Every request was met with a smile and assurance they would help - always came through! Rooms were standard European size but very clean and well appointed. Located in a more residential area but close to trolley car, within walking distance to other transportation.
