  • My husband and I were both pleased with the location of this hotel. At first I thought that the hotel and room was a bit on the ""old"" side, but the longer I was there I appreciated the charm. Every morning we enjoyed a nice complimentary breakfast (which is nice since SF is an expensive place to eat) and a nightly complimentary wine hour. The room was clean although the first night there were some wear holes in the sheets... My biggest complaint about our room was the same as most hotels, the noise! My husband and I used earplugs the second night and slept sound. Ear plugs are a must for San Francisco ! Great place for the price!

  • If you are traveling to San Francisco to tour the city and sight see, then this hotel is definitely worth the stay. It is centrally located and well priced. The rooms are small but perfect if you?re planning to just sleep and get ready in it. The staff is very kind and helpful. There is cont. breakfast every morning and hour in the evenings. This hotel is also located 1 block from the cable car line on Powell and 2 blocks from the bus station. I highly recommend using the public transportation. It is very easy to get around the city and very cheap. The BART station is about 5 blocks from the hotel so there is no need to take a cab from the airport. Just hop on the BART. We had an awesome stay at the Cartwright and will most definitely stay here again. Oh yeah, there was some renovations going on during our stay but the noise didnt start till 9:30 am and was done by 5 pm. If you are out of your room during these hours you wont even know there is construction going on.

  • This was my 2nd visit to this hotel but the 1st since the remodel and name change. The location is very nearly perfect - walking distance to the financial district, chinatown and the Powell cable car line. The hotel is clean and comfortable and the staff is very friendly and helpful at every turn. My girlfriend has already asked to stay there again next year.

  • We have traveled to San Francisco many times and have stayed in different hotels every time. We loved this one! It is steps from the cable car line, union square, Loris diner is on the corner, Dotties True Blue Cafe a few blocks away, banking and shopping around the corner. Easy to get to using the BART, and all forms of public transportation. The room was a quaint victorian style full of charm. We had the corner suite on the top floor with an excellent view of the intersection. The staff were more than helpful and very friendly. Remodeling on the upper suites was almost complete and redecorating is also almost finished. It was clean and taken care of. We would definitely stay here again and again.

  • Stayed at the Larkspur for the first time on a Friday night, to see the City at Christmas. The front desk and support staff were wonderful, and willing to help in every way. The hotel is at a very convenient location, close to Union Square and next to the Powell St. cable car lines. We had a great stay, and would recommend it highly.

  • My husband and I recently stayed at the Larkspur, the last week of January 2009, to celebrate our honeymoon . We stayed for an entire week, M-F, and couldnt have chosen a better hotel. Upon arrival, we were greeted with smiles, and such pleasant faces. During the week, we had a bottle of wine and chocolates sent to our room with a thank-you card, AND a bottle of champagne sent to our room with a card congratulating us on our wedding. The entire staff was so helpful in giving directions. I felt like I was on Cheers, b/c they always knew who my husband and I were, and always greeted us by name! The rooms were the size as to be expected in San Francisco, and the beds were soooo comfortable. The linens were thick, and allowed us to sleep like a king and queen. There is a wine hour every night for about an hour. One of the most helpful things for our trip was the channel on the TV that gave info about the city. It was helpful in choosing restaurants and activities to do. Its right across the street from a Walgreens, in close range to many restaurants (definetly try Lefty Odouls!) and shopping is all around. Downside is parking is $27 a day for self parking. Its not included in the room rate, and the garage is around the corner. All in all, this was a great hotel, with an excellent staff and if I return to SFO I will stay here again!

  • My stay at the Larkspur hotel was excellent. The hotel itself is small and perhaps that is the reason the staff was very friendly, helpful and most accomodating. They offered a free continental breakfast and complimentary wine in the evening. My room was also small, but very clean and well appointed. The price was reasonable for San Francisco and was only a short 2 block walk to Union Square. I would give this hotel a definite thumbs up.

  • This was my first visit to San Francisco and it certainly wont be my last! The Cartwright was in a great location and was a great value for the price. Rooms are small but very adequate and clean. Most of the staff were very friendly and helpful. They made several trip and shuttle reservations for me and saved me a lot of time. The free breakfast was also very nice! Would definitely stay here again...located near the theater district, China Town, and Union Square.

  • Stayed here last new years eve. First time staying in the city. Pros:- Excellent location in Union Square. Rite Aid across the street. ATMs across the street- Friendly and helpful staff- Cool wafflemaker in kitchen- Comfortable bed-Free wireless- Remote controlled ceiling fan- Aveda toiletries- Cable car line is down the block a little- Late-night diner next door- Crepe house next door- About a mile up the hill from Nob Hill and ChinatownCons:- Parking was in a public parking garage located behind the block in a dark and quiet area. No in and out privilege although I was allowed to grab something from my car.- Radiator was controlled by front desk and you have to call to turn it on. No AC. I went in winter so I dont know how stuffy the room could have gotten with only a ceiling fan. Windows can be opened though.- Street noise can be heard with curtains closed- Window faces another buildings window directly- Bathroom is tiny with no window or fan- Room key is a key- Breakfast is standard continental and runs out quickly. At least there are hard-boiled eggs.Note I didnt not pay for this hotel so I dont know about the value. However Ive checked the rates and it is pretty pricey for a small historic hotel thats only four stars.

  • This was our first visit to San Francisco to see our son, so I wasnt sure about location or about hotels. I selected this based on location. I must say the location is perfect, not far from everything. The hotel personnel could not have been nicer, very helpful and friendly. They are remodeling during the week, but what they are doing, its going to be even nicer, they are putting a fireplace in and making it handicapped accessible. We would definitely go back to this hotel on our next visit. We had the parlor suite with 4 adults and 1 child and we had plenty of room. Very nice hotel. Recommend it highly.

  • The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. They took just a moment to explain the available evening wine and snack and breakfast for the next morning and who to ask if we needed anything at all. The room was much much smaller than the average motel, but probably average for older city hotels and was actually sufficient. Everything about the room seemed clean and well, efficient. There is a great deal of remodeling going on at the hotel though this didnt seem to cause any problems during our short stay. The building is a block off the Trolley line which is good and bad. The location is excellent for getting around the city, but a bit noisy as the building is quite old.Overall, the stay was great.

  • This hotel is very centrally located to the cable cars, Chinatown, Fishermans Wharf, shopping, everything you need. There are restaurants within walking distance and a 24 hour Walgreens just across the street for any last minute items. The only problem we had was that we booked this hotel through Travel agency with the promise of a King bed and air conditioning. When we got to the hotel, we had a Queen bed and the hotel would not, or could not, provide us with a King. (I had even called ahead to confirm the King bed was reserved). Also, when we arrived in the room, there was no air-conditioning. I asked why....its listed on the internet as being air-conditioned...the hotel staff told me they need to fix that. They only have one air conditioned room. You have to sleep with the windows open which was really scary to me. I didnt sleep at all the first two nights; the third night I slept from exhaustion. If you book this hotel knowing you have no a/c and you are getting a Queen bed, then it is a great location and good price. They provide a free breakfast and a each evening they offer wine and coffee.

  • My husband and I stayed at the Larkspur for 3 nights. The staff was unmatchable in their helpfulness, courtesy and friendliness. They were great at giving transportation advice, arranging for a trip to Napa Valley and arranging a shuttle to the airport. The location was great! We were able to walk nrealy everyhwhere we wanted! Just a hop skip and a jump to Chinatown for some great food!I was expecting a samll room, I was still sort of disappointed when I saw the room. But it was very comfortable and once I reminded myself that I could have paid twice the cost for a more modern room, we made ourselves feel right at home!Itwas an excellent stay!

  • I used to require fancy, now I just want a clean room with a comfortble bed. Excellent on both counts! This is an old historic S.F. hotel, rooms small but with 10 ceiling. When in S.F. I dont stay in the room unless sleeping, and the bed was every bit as comfy as the St. Francis, which would have cost * a night vs. * at the Larkspur. Travel tip, if you are on a budget, take BART from SFO to Powell St. station, 4 block walk cost you *, as opposed to taxi from the airport which will run you over *. Spend the money you save on hotel and taxi for eating at fine S.F. restaurants. The Larkspur is a blend of old and new, heavy wooden doors with skeleton keyholes have been upgraded to electronic card locks, elegant bath soaps & shampoos, small bath, hair dryer, coffee maker, iron & board in closet, terrycloth bathrobe, flatscreen t.v., excellent location for theaters, Union sq. & Chinatown. Nice staff.

  • The hotel is like a boutique style. It is cute and clean. Lobby on first and second floor very nice. However, our room was very small. Thank goodness we are not large people. Not much room between bed and wall. Bathroom was very small. Two of us could not fit into it together. Bed was very comfortable. Room did not have climate control-it was sometimes cold in room. Did not have to walk for a restaurant, bar, or shops.
